Miami-Dade Public Servants Honored For Community Service

Ten public servants who work at various jobs around the county were honored at a banquet Monday night as winners of the Green Family Foundation United Way American Values Awards. The awards carry a prize of $5,000 and recognize public servants for exceptional public service outside their jobs.

The honorees, whom keynote speaker Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle called ``heroes who quietly move our world forward,'' included Oria Barbara Acebal of Allapattah, a secretary for the IRS; and Jo Ann Jones of North Miami, teacher at Miami Central Senior High.

For 10 years, Bessie Garrett dreamed of showing homeless children a fun time.

What pushed her to do it was meeting an inner-city boy while she was on rounds giving medical treatment to the homeless in Overtown. ``There was an instance where a 5-year-old boy told me that he wanted to get his hair shaved off, and I asked him why,'' Garrett said. ``He told me that if he got his hair shaved off and got really sick, then he could go to Disney World. This really broke my heart.''

Benefactor is Red Cross' Million-Dollar Man

Steven J. Green, a Miami philanthropist who is U.S. ambassador to Singapore, is giving the American Red Cross $1 million for its disaster relief fund and to teach 180,000 local children how to swim.

A formal presentation was planned in Goral Cables on Tuesday night, when the Red Cross installed its board of directors and recognized its volunteers. The money is being donated to the Greater Miami and Keys chapter of Red Cross through the Green Family Foundation. Other recent beneficiaries include Florida International University, the University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum and United Way. The foundation is run by Kimberly Green, daughter of the ambassador and his wife Dorothea.

10 Honored With Annual United Way Award

A Miami-Dade police lieutenant, six public school educators, a clinical social worker, a domestic violence specialist and a college professor were among the 10 public servants who won the fourth annual United Way Green Family Foundation American Values Award. The award recognizes public service workers for their excellence on the job and willingness to go beyond their normal duties to serve the community. Each winner got $5,000 from the Green Family Foundation.
