Conversations at MOCA

Vodou flag

Thursday, June 20, 2019 7-9PM
MOCA Pavilion

MOCA hosts UCLA scholar Dr. Katherine Smith in conversation with Potoprens artist Myrlande Constant, a leading artist in the new style of large, densely beaded Vodou flags. The conversation will be archived in the Digital Library of the Caribbean at Florida International University, in partnership with the FIU LACC.

Dr. Katherine Smith received her PhD in Culture and Performance in 2012. Through extensive ethnographic research, Katherine examines historical transformations of the trickster spirit Gede in the visual and embodied culture of Vodou. Myrlande Constant is a Haitian master sequin artist noted for her labor intensive and densely rich works imbued with historic references and magic. Co-sponsored by the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University as part of its Haitian Studies Program of Excellence.

This is the inaugural event of our 22nd Annual Haitian Summer Institute
