Artist As Catalyst Open Call announcement!
The Artist as Catalyst Program is a two-day immersive experience for emerging artists interested in making a positive social impact with their art. Located in Miami and embracing a specifically regional focus, 15 to 20 young Catalysts, ages 18-26, will be selected to partake in studio classes, keynote conversations, and interactive workshops on the themes of Artistry, Citizenship and Entrepreneurship. Produced by The Peace Studio and guided by experts, scholars and practicing artists, the two-day program is a primer for a full conference in 2023, which our inaugural class of 2022 Catalysts will automatically gain access to.
The Catalyst Program welcomes artists of all disciplines, art forms, and educational backgrounds, as long as they’re actively engaged in some sort of creative practice at the time of the program.

The program benefits those emerging artists who are looking to build community around the questions: How do I make great art? Make a living? And make a difference in the world?
Rooting itself in the dynamic, multicultural hub of Miami, the Artist as Catalyst Program embraces the maxim: “think globally, act locally” and as such will engage thought leaders, community organizers, and artists whose work addresses Miami’s specific challenges and opportunities, and yet whose impact echoes far beyond regional confines.
This years’ program, free to its participants, will be hosted by Green Space Miami on Thursday, July 7th and Friday, July 8th, 2022. Green Space Miami, the Green Family Foundation’s community art space, is guided by the foundation’s principles of inclusion, community empowerment and education. Green Space Miami is dedicated to highlighting Miami-Dade artists and local organizations, illuminating dialogue on critical social issues facing society. Transportation and housing will not be provided. Meals and parking will be covered for all participating Catalysts.

Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series presents Activist Pioneer, Mel Chin
Saturday, March 26 at 3pm
Please join us for a lecture with internationally renowned artist Mel Chin. One of the great idea generators of our time, Chin makes art that is both analytical and poetic, and evades easy classification.
Born in Houston, Texas in 1951, Chin is known for a broad range of approaches in his art, including works that require multi-disciplinary, collaborative teamwork and works that conjoin cross-cultural aesthetics with complex ideas. Chin insinuates art into unlikely places, including destroyed homes, toxic landfills, and even popular television, investigating how art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility. HIs work is found in the collections of several major museums including the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Museum of Fine Art (MFAH), Houston, TX; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Walker Art Center Minneapolis, MN; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.

After almost two years of COVID pandemic-mandated virtual events, 2021 Art Basel Miami Beach will return with its first in-person, socially distanced fair since 2019. Sugarcane Magazine is pleased to present the 2021 Black and Basel Guide to showcase Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami venues that reflect dynamic representations of Black creative expression from across the diaspora.
Black and Basel: Here’s Sugarcane’s guide to Miami Art Week

Sugarcane Magazine’s “Black and Basel Guide” was created to help visitors and South Florida locals feel connected to the contemporary art market. This year’s return-to-art guide shines a spotlight on a series of hybrid virtual and in-person events, auctions and exhibits that provide visibility to both emerging and established Black artists.
This year’s highlights include Art Basel’s Meridians sector of monumental works and installations, curated by Magali Arriola, director of Museo Tamayo, Mexico City. Look for Todd Gray’s “Sumptuous Memories of Plundering Kings” (2021), a 14-part work that explores European colonialism presented by David Lewis; Howardena Pindell’s “Sweatshop” (1998-1999) presented by Garth Greenan Gallery; and Yinka Shonibare CBE’s “Moving Up “(2021), an installation presented by James Cohan Gallery.

Female in Focus
November 18, 2021 – January 18, 2022 | Green Space Miami
This exhibition presents the winners of the Female in Focus award, launched in 2019 in response to the staggering gender imbalance in photography. The exhibition will take place in Miami for the first time at the new Green Space Miami and in UK later this year.
Past and Present of the Body: 16 Voices of Contemporary Photography
November 12 - 21, 2021 | JW Marriott Marquis Miami
Presented by JW Marriott Marquis Miami and Fuentes Angarita Collection (FAC), the exhibition includes the work by artists Carlotta Boettcher, Tania Bohórquez, Reme Campos, Gabo Caruso, Nayari Castillo, Elise Corten, Desirée De Stefano, Kristen Joy Emack, María José Juncos, Karoliina Kase, Miru Kim, Erika Larsen, Morganna Magee, Clotilde Petrosino, Claudia Toledo, and Mirjana Vrbaški.

FloodZone: Photographs by Anastasia Samoylova

FloodZone is an exhibition of an expansive and ongoing photographic series by Anastasia Samoylova, responding to the environmental changes in coastal cities of South Florida.
Women, Photography and Feminisms
Worldwide organizations of women photographers, internationally recognized art historians, curators, and artists from more than 15 countries will convene in Miami to build upon and better represent the dynamic history and contributions of women photographers from the 19th century to date.
