Ambassador Steven J. Green to be named the 2014 Transcendent Leader by FIU’s Center for Leadership

FIU Press Release

MIAMI (June 5, 2014) - Ambassador Steven Jay Green will receive the 2014 Transcendent Leader Award from the Center for Leadership at FIU.

The center will present the award during the Chapman Leadership Honors on Sept. 30, 2014. Green will give the keynote address at the event.

“Ambassador Green’s distinguished leadership in the business world and his noble service as a U.S. ambassador make him a truly excellent choice for this award,” said Mayra Beers, the center’s director of operations. “We are also acknowledging his service and importance to FIU and to our community. We are proud and delighted to have him as our 2014 Transcendent Leader.”

The center was recently ranked number one in the United States among academic institutions for its executive leadership development programs by Leadership Excellence, a publication of HR.com.

The Chapman Leadership Honors is named for Alvah H. Chapman Jr., former chairman of Knight-Ridder and one of South Florida's most influential philanthropic and civic leaders. Previous recipients of the Transcendent Leader Award include Alberto Ibargüen, president of the Knight Foundation, and David Lawrence, retired publisher of The Miami Herald and president of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation.

Green’s career highlights include serving as chairman and CEO of Samsonite Corporation (1988 – 1996), including directing the strategic management and operations of then Samsonite affiliates, American Tourister and Culligan Water.

In 1995, President Clinton appointed Green to the President’s Export Council. In 1997 Green was sworn in as the twelfth United States Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore. He concluded his service in 2001.

During Green’s term, he spearheaded strategic programs that significantly enhanced U.S.-Singapore alliances in economic development, intellectual property, immigration and national security. His innovations and goodwill accomplishments greatly expanded American business opportunities in Singapore and other ASEAN markets.

Green has remained active in national civic affairs through the Green Family Foundation.

He is Chairman and Founder of Greenstreet Partners and serves as director of Knowledge Universe Learning Group. In addition, Ambassador Green is chairman and CEO of K1 Ventures Limited; serves as honorary consul general of Singapore in Miami, Florida; formally served on the International Advisory Board of the Government Investment Corporation of Singapore; is chairman of Guggenheim International; and is on the executive committee of Guggenheim International. He is a former board member of Scripps Research Institute, one of the world’s largest independent non-profit biomedical research organizations.

In June of 2009, Ambassador Green received an honorary doctorate degree from the FIU College of Law. FIU’s Green Library on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus is named in honor of him and his wife Dorothea.

The Greens have two daughters and two grandchildren.
